I got my spawn on the tenth of May. This is a good time to get frog spawn in Alberta because the weather is just right for mating!
Spawn is found in small ponds or road side ditches. Swampy areas are best, where you find cattails and still water, you’ll find spawn! The best thing to look for (or listen for) when searching for frog spawn are mating calls! Listen for the frogs music! Where you hear their croaks you will find their babies! 🙂
Frog spawn is pretty tricky when it comes to spotting it! My dad found it this time. It looks like black dots floating in the water when it’s in the pond but once you put it into your container you will probably be able to see the transparent gel around the dots.
If you think you have too much spawn you can cut it with sharp scissors. You may be horrified with that last sentence but if you do it right it is not harmful to the living things inside! Just be careful to not cut the black dots and you’ll be good!
Another thing you have to be careful with is white spawn. Sometimes what would normally be black dots in the spawn are white dots. This means that they are not fertilized. They wont turn into tadpoles!
Here are some links to pictures of me and my family collecting the spawn! I had a lot of fun gettting my frogs this year, I hope you did too!

PS: Have a lovely day!
This is an awesome blog and some pictures would be really nice!
